Road Base (20mm)
Road Base (20mm)

This is a quarried road base, typically blue to black in colour, and sized at 20 mm minus (meaning it includes material graded from 20 mm down to dust.) It comprises a mix of crushed rock particles and blue metal gravel.
As Road Base compacts well, it serves as a good bed below sand for paving and under decorative pebbles or decomposed granites. Generally, road base can be used anywhere you need a solid base before construction, especially for driveways or paths.
Compared with that of Blue Metal, the road base price is more economical when buying in larger quantities. Turtle Nursery and Landscaping Supplies offer a good, competitive road base price and Sydney-wide delivery, 7 days per week.

DGB (Densely Graded Base) is similar to Standard Road Base but a cut above, as it is compliant with RMS specification 3051 and suitable for use a road base material under bitumen, in developments, sub-division, council roadways and so on.
It is sized at ‘20 mm minus’, which means it ranges from 20 mm down to dust in particle sizes.
For general use in pathways, driveways and gardens, where stricter compliance is not an issue, we recommend you use the Standard Road Base as a cheaper and easier alternative. It will usually suffice, unless your job specification demands DGB.

One form of road base for sale is Recycled Asphalt, which is made from reclaimed road material, often called ‘Rotor Mill.’ It is a mix of asphalt from roads and the road base material underneath, and has been screened to ’30 mm minus’ (i.e. contains particles ranging in size from 30 mm down to dust). Recycling asphalt provides a good cheap option as a robust material suitable for rural or temporary driveways.

Blue Metal (5, 10, 20mm)
Blue Metal is a quarried, crushed aggregate rock that can range in colour from blue to black. It comes in three sizes: 5 mm, 10 mm or 20 mm, and is primarily used in making concrete. Because it is a clean, crushed rock, it is also ideal for drainage, particularly around agricultural pipes. Blue metal is a popular choice for constructing driveways or paths.
10 mm and 20 mm sized rocks are typically used when making concrete. The larger 20 mm size rocks work best to bind with cement or asphalt and form a better, stronger concrete. Generally, the 5 mm size is not recommended for such tasks, as it is considered too small to provide a desired stable base.
Please note that colours can vary greatly from load to load and this is a high turnover product, so what you see one day will be different the next. If colour is specifically important to you, you may wish to inspect the material prior to delivery and on the day of delivery. We recommend getting the whole quantity at one time, for consistency.
In short: Be sure to calculate and order all the materials required for your blue gravel driveway or other project in one lot, to avoid the variations in size and colour that can occur.
Turtle Nursery and Landscaping Supplies are your local Sydney blue metal suppliers. We have good, competitive blue metal gravel prices and 7-day delivery, Sydney-wide.
